You can even add chicken for a protein packed twist making it a fantastic pasta chicken pesto salad option. Plus we can remix it for a variety of pesto dishes, like pesto gnocchi recipe or pesto potato variations.

Pesto Tortellini Salad

Pesto tortellini salad is a simple yet flavor packed dish that is perfect for any occasion. With tender, cheese filled tortellini coated in a rich, herby pesto sauce, every bite is creamy, fresh, and satisfying. It can be a quick lunch, a side for a BBQ, or a light dinner, it always hits the spot. You can toss it together in minutes using store bought pesto or take it up a notch with homemade sauce. The best part? It is easy to customize. Add grilled chicken for extra protein, throw in some fresh veggies for crunch, or keep it classic with just pasta and pesto. No matter how you make it, this dish is always a crowd-pleaser.

Tortellini Pesto Salad

  • Tortellini – Cheese or spinach-filled tortellini work best.
  • Pesto Sauce – Homemade or store-bought for convenience.
  • Protein Options – Add grilled chicken for a chicken and pesto salad.
  • Veggies & Salad – Cherry tomatoes, spinach, red onion, peppers, sugar snap peas and they all add crunch.
  • Cheese – Parmesan or mozzarella balls for extra creaminess.
  • Nuts – Pine nuts or almonds for texture and crunch.

Pesto Salad Variations & Substitutions

Pesto Gnocchi Recipe

If you are a fan of soft, pillowy pasta, swap out the tortellini for gnocchi. These little potato dumplings soak up the pesto beautifully, creating a rich and comforting dish. You can use store bought gnocchi for convenience or make your own for an extra special touch. Serve it warm for a cozy meal or let it cool for a refreshing pesto gnocchi salad.

Pesto Potato Salad

For a heartier twist, mix in baby potatoes instead of tortellini. Boil them until fork tender then toss them with pesto for a creamy, flavorful alternative to traditional potato salad. You can leave the skins on for extra texture or peel them for a smoother bite. This version pairs perfectly with grilled meats, making it a great side dish for summer cookouts.

Chicken and Pesto Salad with Extra Crunch

A little crunch can take this salad to the next level. Toasted pine nuts add a buttery, nutty flavor, while sunflower seeds bring a slightly earthy bite. Sprinkle them on top just before serving for the best texture. If you want even more crunch, try adding crispy chickpeas or crushed almonds for a fun twist.

Pesto Salad Pasta Ideas

Don’t want to use gnocchi or Tortellini? This recipe will suit many other pasta varieties. Examples below.

  • Fusilli – The spiral shape holds onto pesto beautifully, ensuring every bite is coated in flavor.
  • Orzo – This small, rice-shaped pasta creates a lighter, more delicate pesto salad that’s easy to scoop and eat.
  • Penne – The tube shape allows pesto to cling inside and out, making for a rich and satisfying bite.
  • Farfalle (Bowtie Pasta) – The flat, ridged surface adds texture and holds pesto well while looking great in a salad.
  • Rotini – Similar to fusilli, its tight spirals trap pesto, making each bite extra flavorful.
  • Gemelli – A twisted pasta that grips pesto perfectly while adding a bit of chew to the dish.
  • Cavatappi – This corkscrew-shaped pasta gives the salad a fun texture while holding onto plenty of pesto.
  • Ditalini – Small tube pasta that works well in bite-sized pesto salads with lots of mix-ins.
  • Campanelle – The ruffled edges and hollow center create a unique shape that catches pesto and adds a bit of elegance.
  • Orecchiette – The small, cup-like shape scoops up pesto and mix-ins for a well-balanced bite every time.

Tortellini Pesto Salad Serving Suggestions

Adding grilled chicken or shrimp to your tortellini pesto salad is a great way to boost protein while keeping the flavors balanced and fresh. Juicy, seasoned chicken pairs beautifully with the creamy pesto, making the dish more filling and satisfying. If you prefer seafood, grilled shrimp adds a slightly sweet and smoky contrast that complements the herbaceous sauce. Both options turn this salad into a hearty meal rather than just a side dish, perfect for lunch or dinner.

For even more texture and flavor, serve your pesto tortellini salad with a side of garlic bread or bruschetta. The crispy, golden edges of toasted bread are perfect for scooping up extra pesto and cheese, making sure none of that delicious sauce goes to waste.

If you’re looking for a lighter touch, try serving the salad over a bed of fresh greens like arugula or spinach. The peppery bite of arugula or the mild earthiness of spinach adds a refreshing contrast, making the dish feel bright and well-balanced.

Pesto Salad Pasta Storage & Meal Prep Tips

French Onion Pie Easy and Healthy

French Onion Pie Easy and Healthy

You know those days when you just cannot be bothered to spend forever in the kitchen…. but you still want something super tasty? This French Onion Puff Pastry Pie is the answer. Trust me, it is so easy and quick to make, and you can use whatever ingredients you have in the fridge or freezer. We will also claim its fancy enough to impress your family or friends, you just don’t have to spend hours in the kitchen to create it.

Easy French Onion Pie

First off we are using frozen puff pastry, so there is no need to mess around making dough from scratch. Just let it thaw until moldable. Which this is happening you make the filling, at this stage you have already got half the job done. The filling is a one pot deal too. You toss in your veggies and meat if using, mix in a packet of French Onion Soup mix (super easy shortcut), and then stir in some cream and milk to make everything creamy and delicious. It’s like a one pot wonder but with a flaky, golden pastry topping. Who doesn’t love the sound of that?

Vegetarian French Onion Pie or Meat? It’s Your Call

The best part about this recipe is super flexible. If you are a vegetarian, just skip the meat and load it up with more veggies. Mushrooms, peas, corn, onions, carrots… these all work perfectly. You could even add some spinach or broccoli if you have got them lying around in the fridge. It is like a veggie packed pie of goodness.

If you are more of a meat eater, go ahead and add chicken, beef, or turkey. Whatever you have got on hand will work. This pie is basically the ultimate “whatever’s in the fridge” kind of meal. I used diced ham when I made it, but you can use any kind of leftover meat. And if you don’t have leftovers, go grab some cooked rotisserie chicken from the store, super easy!

Pie Serving Options

You can totally eat this pie by itself because it is pretty hearty, but if you want to make it extra fancy (or stretch it further), serve it with a side salad or some roasted veggies. Honestly though, the flaky puff pastry and creamy filling is enough to make anyone happy. The great thing is you can cut it into big pieces if you are feeling hungry or slice it smaller if you are serving a group.

This French Onion Pie is one of those meals that sounds fancy but is actually super easy to make. It is quick, adaptable (whether you are into meat or veggies), and it works for both a casual family dinner or when you want to cook for guests. Plus, it is tasty enough that no one will guess how little time you spent on it 🙂

Give it a try the next time you need a fast, filling dinner. You will thank us later.

Easy Mushroom Pasta Recipe

This dish may sound fancy, but it is surprisingly easy. Its just three main steps, and everything cooks in one pan. Less cleanup, which is always a win!

We would argue that this dish is actually kind of healthy too. Mushrooms are loaded with nutrients, and onions have antioxidants. Plus the pasta gives you carbs for energy and the cream adds a bit of richness. So you get a dish that feels indulgent but also gives you some good nutritional value.

French Onion Pasta Mushroom Options

For French Onion Pasta with Mushrooms, the right mushrooms can elevate the dish with their earthy and savory notes. Cremini mushrooms are a fantastic choice offering a deeper richer flavor than basic white mushrooms. If you want something heartier then portobello mushrooms work well bringing a meaty texture that pairs beautifully with caramelized onions. For a touch of elegance try shiitake mushrooms which add a slightly smoky kick. Oyster mushrooms can bring a delicate mild flavor that balances the creaminess of the pasta. Another luxurious twist is chanterelle mushrooms or morels which both offer a nutty complex profile that takes the dish to the next level.

Caramelized Onion Pasta Sauce Options

When making a caramelized onion pasta sauce there are several additions and suggestions that can enhance the flavor and texture. To deepen the savory flavour try adding a splash of balsamic vinegar or a drizzle of wine while caramelizing the onions. Garlic is a classic addition that pairs perfectly with onions and provides an aromatic base for the sauce. For richness a generous dollop of cream cheese, sour cream or heavy cream will give the sauce a velvety texture. To balance the sweetness of the onions and a pinch of herbs such as thyme or rosemary can add color element, while a sprinkle of parmesan or grated pecorino will bring a sharp salty contrast. For a little heat add some chili flakes or a dash of black pepper. Finally a broth from chicken or vegetables can be used to adjust the sauce consistency and provide additional layers of flavor.

French Onion Pasta Options

Here are some pasta varieties that would pair beautifully with a our French Onion Creamy Pasta recipe

  • Fettuccine – Wide and flat noodles that hold the creamy sauce well.
  • Pappardelle – Even wider than fettuccine and even more perfect for soaking up rich flavors.
  • Tagliatelle – A slightly thinner ribbon pasta great for creamy textures.
  • Penne – Tube shaped pasta ideal for trapping sauce inside.
  • Rigatoni – Larger ridged tubes that cling to the sauce.
  • Cavatappi – Twisted corkscrew shaped pasta that grabs sauce in every curve.
  • Fusilli – Spiral shaped pasta that wraps the creamy sauce perfectly.
  • Orecchiette – “Little ears” that scoop up the sauce for each bite.
  • Campanelle – Bell shaped pasta that complements creamy dishes beautifully.
  • Spaghetti – A classic option that pairs well with nearly any sauce.
  • Bucatini – Similar to spaghetti but hollow, adding a fun texture.

French Onion Pasta Remixing

One of the great things about this recipe is its versatility. You can easily add frozen vegetables or chicken to make it even more hearty and nutritious. If you are adding frozen vegetables just simply toss them into the pan along with the onions and mushrooms. They will cook heat up as the other vegetables become tender. For a protein addition add cooked chicken to the pasta and sauce mixture. The chicken will absorb the delicious flavors of the sauce, making the dish even more satisfying.
